When Cole's mom is finished laying traps in the crawl space, she is in the process of using a cordless screwdriver to replace the mesh grille. Later in the evening, in an establishing shot of the house, the grille is off. Later still, when Cole is looking for somewhere to hide, he has to unscrew the grille to enter the crawlspace.
