When the Enterprise arrives to the fight, the Borg cube is getting pummeled with photon torpedoes. Data reports "It has sustained heavy damage to its outer hull." Usually, conventional weapons have no effect on the Borg due to their powerful subspace field. Perhaps a few quantum torpedoes early in the fight disabled this shield.
