The caboose is much more modern than the rest of the railcars making up the train. In addition to the automatic couplers it has steel panel construction which is most obvious when the uncoupled cars careen off the track over a cliff caboose first. The cupola style caboose is very similar to the cars constructed in the 1940's for Southern Pacific Railroad. Cabooses were just beginning to be phased out by most US railroads at the time the movie was made so many of the modern surplus cars were cheap and available.
