At the house of Lester Ivar, the retired officer, Harry Ross somberly looks at a series of newspaper articles depicting events from 22 years earlier that establish the background of current circumstances and are titled: "Actor missing", "Actress questioned in husband's disappearance", and "Actor's disappearance presumed suicide". While the first few lines of each article expand on the title, they then satirically digress to nonsensical statements, such as the following which is repeated in each report:"The coast guard initially tried to cover up the incident by creating a paper trail so big a fork lift had to be brought in to move away the reams of paper from the door. The mound of paper work was placed in front of the door to prevent anyone to enter the coast guard offices before they could talk to the officer involved and keep him quiet..." Another inconsistency is a classified advertisement in one of the newspaper clippings that states: "Internet Sales". The internet became widely available in the 1990s, which is contemporary to the plot; however, the newspaper article itself and the referenced incidence would have dated to 1975.
