In World War II when the American paratroopers jumped out of the airplanes their parachutes opened immediately. They were attached to a line (wire) inside the plane that would open their parachutes immediately after they jumped out the door. (The "stand up! Hook on!" When they do this, told to stand up, they are hooking up to the line/wire).Back then the person jumping didn't pull their own parachute open while free falling.
