When Finn and Poe escape from the Empire ship in a TIE fighter, Finn mentions flying to another planet before being shot down. It is said in Guerre stellari that the TIE fighter is "a short-range fighter" and cannot travel far from resources (ship/base). Nothing in the film suggests that a more efficient TIE fighter has been developed in the intervening 20 or 30 years.
