The first time the monster goes down into the basement, it does so at the sound of Evelyn's mirror breaking (and her screaming as the nail is driven into her foot). The second time, it may be due to the sound of water flooding the basement. But the third time (at the end of the movie), Evelyn and the children are hiding without making the slightest noise and, despite this, the monster (who is blind and orients himself by sound) still descends into the basement.
