While Emma calls her mother just after the wedding, Flap picks up a paperback copy of Sophie's Choice, published in 1979. Flap and Emma married around 1975.Actually they were married before then, sometime in the 60s. In the sequel The Evening Star, which begins in 1988, it is said that Melanie was 3 when Emma died and she is around 18 at the beginning of that movie. This makes her born around 1970.
