After Coral's death, Marlin would be the largest clownfish in the anemone. Being a sequential hermaphrodite, this would cause 'him' to change into a 'she' - a female clownfish. However, the filmmakers might have worried that Marlin changing from a male to a female would have made it too sexually suggestive for a children's film.
