When discussing the lost landing craft from the training mission, reference is made to problems with the "duplex-drive" and it's described as an issue with the power settings of the landing craft. In fact, duplex-drive is part of the specialized Sherman tanks that were intended to "swim" ashore during the invasion, launched from the landing craft. "Duplex-drive refers to the fact those tanks had propellers mounted to operate while they were in the water, floating using a canvas apron that extended above the body of the tank. In the event, the tanks assigned to American divisions were launched too far out, in too heavy seas and most sank before reaching shore.
