The Russian throne is seemingly already abolished when Nicholas abdicates for himself and heir Alexis. As long as there are other members of the royal family alive it is not yet abolished. The one after Alexis was Grand Duke Michael (who is never mentioned in the film). In reality, the Russian throne got entirely abolished when the people of Russia voted on becoming a Republic instead of retaining the monarchy.
