The man planning the heist has theoretically checked the background of all three convicts as he wants to make sure none of them knows the others. A key feature of the plan has the crooks wearing masks when they meet and during the robbery so they can't identify each other. Yet Boyd Kane reveals, after Joe substitutes himself for Pete, that he has served time with Pete, so he knows Joe is not Pete.
