During the initial strike by the first tornadoes in Blainsworth, the siren goes off, but then immediately is cut off. Although the characters let down their guard and go about their business, the siren abruptly cutting off is a major indication that it has been destroyed by the storm and that a tornado is very imminent. When the siren first went off, proper shelter procedure is going immediately to the shelter with a battery radio and waiting for the weather personnel to inform you that the storm has passed.
