Sarris' appearance at the convention indicates he was still aboard the command section after separating from the Protector. Logically, he would have been removed from the bridge after Mathesar knocks him out to be held elsewhere. Even if that location was part if the separable section, he would have been moved from the part going to Earth. If Sarris managed to escape to stow away on the Command Section, surely the Thermians would have alerted the bridge crew.
