Black soldier, Corporal Ira Clark, tells the president that his unit, the 5th Massachusetts Colored Cavalry, is shipping out for the assault on Wilmington with the 24th Infantry. The 5th Massachusetts did not participate in the assault. At that time they were guarding Confederate prisoners at Point Lookout, Maryland. Later they took part in the battles around Petersburg. In addition, no 24th Infantry, from any state, was at Wilmington.
