When Lord Rathbone is talking to Chon, who is pretending to be an Indian Maharaja, at the party, he establishes that he has spent time in both China and India. Most Brits in the late 19th century might not have been able to tell an Indian accent from a Chinese accent, but as Lord Rathbone has spent time in both countries, he should easily have known that Chon was lying about being Indian, simply by his Chinese accent.
