The "final hill" sequence was just silly. First, their attempts to assist Katy up the hill by pushing is of little enough help on level terrain let alone a 20%+ grade. Second, hand cranking uses exactly the same mechanical advantage available to the engine (gearing of the transmission and differential). Thus using the engine in the same manner (in reverse and just enough RPM to move the vehicle) would be just as effective. Third, Capt. Anson: ". . . because the movement is so gradual the sand isn't disturbed" would be true regardless of the power source (engine or human muscle).
