Counselor Troi detects "one life sign, very faint" while she and Data are searching the wreckage of the Enterprise D. Debris is cleared away to reveal Spot, Data's cat. While Spot is smaller than a human and thus would not register as strong of a "life sign" as one, Starfleet tricorders have been shown to easily distinguish between types of life signs. It would be able to tell the difference between a human life sign and a cat.
