Cronyn broadcasts the first few digits of Pi to the (presumed) Martians, on the theory that any advanced civilization would be familiar with it and respond in kind. However, Cronyn has no basis to assume that Martians would use a base 10/decimal system as used by humans on Earth, which would be required in order for them to recognize Pi as Cronyn was broadcasting it.
