Hilts describes using a steel rod to breath through while he and Ives tunnel out. He doesn't describe how they get the rod through 3 feet of solid ground, over and over, as they progress along; or the fact that a rod (or hose) has to be a minimum of 1 to 2 inches in diameter for them to be able to draw any air through it.
