The notion of an atomic bomb set to automatically destroy Wildfire is rather implausible for numerous reasons, but the five minute deadline with the single "odd man" is ridiculous. What if he's asleep? What if he believes five minutes isn't enough time to decide? Which of course it isn't, so he would always cancel the bomb, defeating the purpose of the device. There's also no requirement that the odd man is trained at all. Supposedly, Hall was meant to have read about it, but that's nowhere near training. The overall notion fits into Crichton's theme of foolish scientists arrogant with technology, but that doesn't explain why neither the belligerent Hall or Levitt point out these issues.
