Before the flight, Kyle tells Julia that she helps the airplane's engines work, which indicates that Kyle is a powerplant engineer. The two components of a airliner, airframe and powerplant, come from different manufacturers with very little overlap. A powerplant engineer would have no knowledge of the design intricacies of the airframe.
