At the end when Madeleine and George are driving back home to Chicago, the highway sign reads "King 6 Winston-Salem 19 and Lexington 40" which would indicate that they are headed South (the sign is actually on Southbound U.S. highway 52) which would be the opposite direction to get get back home to Chicago.
