Morpheus tells Neo that humanity caused the nuclear winter in order to stop the machines, who were powered by solar power. This does not make any sense, however. The machines could power themselves through any number of non-solar electricity generating means: fossil fuels, nuclear, geothermal, etc. It is humans who are reliant on solar power as all of the food they eat ultimately relies on the sun.
