While hitting a shark in the nose MAY drive the shark away if it's attacking you, once a shark has you in its jaws, especially a large shark of more than six or seven feet (as in the case of Jaws), hitting it in the nose is not a guarantee that the shark will leave you alone and may in fact just anger it and make it more aggressive. So Quint hitting the shark in the nose would not necessarily drive it away.
