When trying to sneak in the castle, Robin rubs horse manure on himself, and the guard at the door is disgusted and violently tell him to stay away. However, that smell was fairly common in the Middle Ages, as manure was regularly used in many trades, like builders, thatchers or leather making: pretty much all low classes would smell like that, and would not have bothered a soldier. On the other hand, Robin's trick would not have been necessary, as castles were centers of social life and entrance was not heavily guarded, except in case of attack.
