The film proposes that gang members are paid to execute Jake, but then do not because of Jake's assistance to the gang leader's niece earlier in the day. The gang members return Jake's weapon and then release him to deal with Alonzo.However, by taking Jake's weapon, binding him and then preparing to kill him, the gang has committed multiple felonies for which all members could spend years , if not decades, in prison. They could not have released him and simply hoped that he would be grateful as multiple witnesses had seen or been involved in the crime. Even though they should have killed him simply to prevent the incident from ever causing future problems, Alonzo was Jake's priority at the time and Jake will always remember they spared him when they didn't have to because the niece was already safe.
