When Aquaman raises the sub it can be seen that it was rising faster than the air bubbles it was creating, therefore it couldn't safely adjust to the change in atmospheric pressure. When he ripped opened the hatch, he would have instantly decompressed the sub giving everyone on board the bends, if not kill them outright.
