Just before he steals a pair of pigs and deserts the army in 1417, Auncient Pistol says that his wife has just died of the "malady of France." This refers to syphilis, a North/Central American sexually transmitted disease, which was first brought to Europe by Spanish sailors around 1500. This anachronism was also present in William Shakespeare's play.
