Contrary to the belief that there would have been no way for them to time the Delorean to hit 88 mph right at the strike of the lightning bolt, the flyer Doc reads states that lightning struck the tower "precisely" at 10:04--meaning the second it hit that time--thus they could indeed time the Delorean to the exact moment of the lightning strike.
