Brody and Hendricks investigate the killer whale carcass found on the beach, but in reality there would be no need for them to investigate unless they found evidence that the whale died as a result of criminal activity (e.g. hunting violation), and even then the incident might fall within the jurisdiction of another agency. Because the whale appeared to die following a fight with another predator at an unknown distance from the island, there was really no reason for a local law enforcement agency to be involved, except for providing assistance (e.g. crowd control) to the primary agency investigating.
