Joe tells Kathleen that he only visited her store because he was buying presents for Annabelle and Matt and it was the only place to find children's books in the neighborhood. However, before they visited the store he was asking the kids if they wanted to go see a movie and they only stopped because Annabelle saw the sign for the storybook lady, so he was clearly not looking for the store.
