When Torpedo Squadron 8 begins their attack on the carrier, Ensign George H. Gay Jr. is shot down before he can release his torpedo. Historically, he released his torpedo, it missed. Ensign Gay was making his escape back to the Hornet when he was jumped by fighters and shot down.
