While Esther's odd behavior and hints of psychopathy could be written off as a coincidence at first to John, the fact that he still doubts that there's something wrong with Esther even after Danny nearly dies in the treehouse fire seems nonsensical. It should have been obvious to John that there was no natural cause for the fire.
