When narrating, Henry says that Tommy was shot in the face "so his mother couldn't give him an open casket at the funeral." Earlier, Tommy was shot in the back of the head. A shot to the face would present the mortician with a small entry wound that could be patched up easily; the back of the head would be blown away, but unseen in a casket. A shot to the back of the head would obliterate the face, necessitating a closed-casket funeral.
