When Marty looks up Doc in the phone book in 1955, he finds the name and says under his breath: "Great, you're alive!". Of course Doc is alive, if he hadn't been alive in 1955, he couldn't have lived in 1985 and built the time machine, and Marty wouldn't have gone back in time. This, however, might be a simple intended misunderstanding to underline that Marty yet haven't grasped the (fictional) conditions of time travelling.
