When Marty returns to 1985, he sees his other self (at the altered Lone Pine Mall) fleeing the terrorists and going through time just as he had earlier in the movie. Doc knew it was going to happen, and he "played dead" for two reasons; for the Libyans (obviously), but more importantly, to make sure Marty thought he was dead and would still warn him about the attack in 1955 (i.e. to prevent a time paradox). But Doc has already learned of the attack by the terrorists and prevented his death. He has, once again, sent Marty back in time, and since this is the Marty from the "alternate" 1985, there is no guarantee he will take the same actions he did before.
