Recounting how Joe stood her up, Nellie says she had baked him "a great big pizza pie". While Chicago's Pompei Restaurant had it on its menu when it opened in 1909, pizza was confined to Little Italy until 1939 when the Daily Tribune reported on the dish offered at Pizzeria Napolitana, eaten "with the fingers." The "pizza pie" Nellie references is probably the "deep dish" style introduced by Pizzeria Uno in 1943.
