The #1 engine, having been damaged, is hanging down and is thus creating drag on the left side of the aircraft. It is described by the First Officer as being like "dragging a foot in the water in a rowboat.". To offset this drag, which would pull the aircraft to the left, one must compensate for it by using the opposite aileron and rudder. At no time does the flight crew do this, operating the controls as if nothing had happened, and with the ailerons completely neutral.
