Because of the way the story is set up, where David gets away from the cop who's minding him the audience should only be able to see and hear things that David could see and hear. But after he jumps into the elevator and the doors close in the pursuing cop's face, there is a very brief scene outside the elevator in which the cop pounds the closed doors in frustration and then hits the call buttons on the wall.
