Before Tobin leaves in his escape suit, Robinson instructs him to pull a cord on his suit to inflate it as soon as he leaves the submarine. In the climax, when Tobin and Mazarov are floating on the surface, an escape suit surfaces with gold for them, but of course gold bars could not have pulled the inflation cord.
