The Space Shuttle is shown being launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Some facilities were constructed there (at SLC-6) in the 1970s to support Shuttle launches, however the complex was mothballed in the late 1980s after the Challenger Disaster and its assets were transferred to the Kennedy Space Center. In the early 2000s SLC-6 was converted to be used for ULA's Delta IV family of launch vehicles, a configuration that it remains in to this day.
