In the film, the bench Leonard carves his name in was located under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The approximate year that scene is set is 1930 (Leonard was 20 when he was committed in 1939, his symptoms started at age 11). Construction for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge wasn't started until 1959, and the bridge wasn't opened until 1964.
