At the end of the film Malcolm Crowe comes down the stairs to the living room. The camera is at a low angle looking up from the living room floor toward the vestibule area at the foot of the stairs. There is a leather covered sofa and two overstuffed leather chairs crammed side by side to fit into the space. Crowe's wife is slouched in one of the chairs. The camera changes to above, the wife falls asleep and drops Crowe's ring, which now rolls over open floor boards.This is not at all the progression of the action in the film. When Malcolm comes in from the street, his wife is already asleep. He talks to her and she drops the ring. At this point, having paid attention to what Cole said about dead people "only seeing what they want to see", the viewer realizes that Malcolm sees the furniture the way it used to be. Then he realizes that he's dead and begins to see things the way they are: at Cole's, the restaurant, the blocked door, the blood and finally, the re-arranged furniture.
