A characteristic of rockets with solid propellant is that they cannot be shut down once ignited. The Space Shuttle's solid rocket boosters could not randomly "shut down" as one did in the film. A spontaneous loss of thrust from one of the boosters would mean it either prematurely separated from the rest of the stack, or it suffered a catastrophic failure that almost certainly would have destroyed the rest of the vehicle.
