Siamo in una cittadina del Sud degli Stati Uniti; un poliziotto scopre, durante il suo giro notturno, il corpo di un industriale, che era in procinto di aprire una fabbrica importante per la città. Gillespie, il capo della polizia locale, dà ordine di arrestare tutti i sospetti. Tra gli altri, gli viene portato anche un nero, elegante e con il portafogli ben fornito, catturato alla stazione mentre aspettava il treno. Ma l'uomo è l'ispettore Tibbs, della polizia federale. La vedova del morto vuole che sia Tibbs a condurre le indagini; cosa che avverrà, non senza scontri aperti con Gillespie e sbandamenti. Identificato l'omicida, l'ispettore riparte verso il Nord.
