Nevrotico e inibito critico cinematografico di San Francisco, divorziato, vede apparire al proprio fianco il fantasma (J. Lacy) del Bogart di Casablanca come una specie di angelo custode e, vincendo la propria timidezza, cerca di imitarlo. Scritto da W. Allen che l'ha tratto da una sua commedia di successo (1969) in 3 atti, replicata sul palcoscenico per 453 volte, è un film brillante, armonioso, un po' verboso, con personaggi psicologicamente ben definiti, che contribuì alla nascente popolarità di Allen più delle 2 regie precedenti (Prendi i soldi e scappa e Il dittatore dello stato libero di Bananas). Il titolo riprende una celebre battuta di Casablanca (1942) in cui Ingrid Bergman, rivolta al pianista nero, dice: “Play it, Sam” (Suonala, Sam). Il personaggio di Allen si chiama Allan Felix nell'originale, ma fu ribattezzato Sam in Italia perché i distributori pensarono che non si capisse l'allusione.
