Nick Hume ha un buon lavoro in una compagnia assicurativa, è un buon padre di famiglia di due figli adolescenti in costante competizione tra di loro sotto lo sguardo amorevole della loro madre. Finché una sera, di ritorno da un incontro di hockey sull ghiaccio in cui il figlio aveva dato buona prova di sé, si ferma a fare benzina in una stazione di servizio isolata e il ragazzo viene ucciso nel corso di una rapina. Nick vede in faccia l'omicida e lo riconosce in carcere ma, giunto al momento di farlo incriminare, rinuncia all'accusa per farsi giustizia da solo.
