Karl Childers ha trascorso la sua adolescenza e gran parte della sua età adulta in manicomio per aver ucciso da ragazzino la madre e l'amante di questa. Rilasciato dal manicomio, si trova a fare i conti con l'ostilità dei suoi concittadini. Ma l'amicizia con un bambino, divertito dal suo accento buffo, gli restuisce serenità e fiducia.
