Dennis Barlow, appena arrivato a Hollywood dall'Inghilterra, si trova a dover organizzare la sepoltura dello zio, nell'organizzatissima e fastosissima agenzia funebre "Sentieri Melodiosi". La sua attenzione è attratta dalla truccatrice Aimee Thanatogenos, ma ha tre problemi: le dure regole del proprietario, il Reverendo Glenworthy, la rivalità con l'imbalsamatore Mr. Joyboy e la vergogna di dover lavorare, a sua volta, in una ditta di pompe funebri per animali.
